REDEFINE | Freelensing featuring My Three Sons Images

“There is only one sun. We can’t all claim to only have one way to use the light, but we can REDEFINE how we choose to express it. “

Why are you passionate about this topic?

Freelensing has given my photography the artistic flare I was looking for. I would like to say my style is dreamy, soft and flawed..but in a good way. It allows me to break the photography “rules”, while still helping create a beautiful image. It took a while for me to feel comfortable putting flawed images out there. But, as my passion grew for this technique the worry about judgement faded away.

When did you first learn this technique?
I started to learn freelensing about a year and half ago. I loved the look it brought to the work I was seeing. I have always loved soft focus and out of focus images. I felt like it was closer to what I wanted to achieve in my own journey. So, I started  studying anything I could find on the subject and read every tutorial I could get my hands on. But, the constant practice was huge. It takes a lot of patience. Some people may get the technique right away..but most will need time and practice to get it down.

What are the tips you would share with anyone trying to achieve this technique?

  1. Patience…lots of it! It will take awhile to get the technique down.

2. Use live view…it’s much easier to find focus this way.

3. Moving your lens further from the sensor will make close objects in

focus… further away will enable you to get things in focus from a distance

4. Try starting out with a 50mm or 35mm lens (i love my 35mm)

5. Set your exposure before taking the lens off

6. Make sure that your lens is set to infinity and set on manual focus
Have fun and practice, practice, practice!
