“There is only one sun. We can’t all claim to only have one way to use the light, but we can REDEFINE how we choose to express it.”
Why are you passionate about this topic?
I have a background in fashion photography, but my style has always lent itself to an ethereal, fairytale-like feel rather than “high fashion,” so the bridal world just fits my aesthetic perfectly. I love being able to work with designers to showcase their pieces, and for weddings, photographing brides is one of my favorite parts!
When did you first learn this technique?
I did my first bridal lookbook back in 2013 as a trade with a local bridal accessories designer, Kata Banko Couture. After I did that, I was hooked. Since then, I have gotten to work with so many amazing designers and vendors & have been able to create some amazing photos through the collaborations.
What are the tips you would share with anyone trying to achieve this technique?
For photographers working with brides on their wedding day, here are a few tips to achieve the best results.
1.) Get inspiration from other sources. I like to mix a fairytale-like quality with high fashion poses, so I regularly look through high-fashion magazines like Vogue for inspiration, along with shows like Reign & Once.
2.) Use her wardrobe! Long train? Have someone throw it! (Seriously…if it’s done right, she’ll look like a beautiful swan.) Or have her twirl in her dress, or throw her veil. There are so many fun things you can do!
3.) Mix up the expressions. It might be one the happiest days of her life, but doing some more serious photos can lead to some amazingly timeless photos.
What were the challenges for you in the beginning?
When it comes to the bridal collections I photograph, the biggest challenges I saw in the beginning was just getting my work out there for designers to find. I probably sent over 1,000 emails (I’m not even exaggerating) to designers whose work I loved, and only heard back from a handful, but it has been so, so worth it.
I’m Angie, and I’m the photographer behind La Candella Weddings. I’m based in Pittsburgh, PA, but love traveling. I specialize in weddings and bridal lookbook collections. I also have an obsession with anything related to France, and would choose vintage over modern any day.
