Is this personal work/client work?

This session was client work.  I’m typically more of a family photographer so this was a little different for me and I jumped at the opportunity.

What about this session was most memorable?

This was a very unique and memorable session.  The couple was celebrating their 10 year anniversary and shared with me that they had never had true wedding photos done.  The thought it would be a fun anniversary present to themselves to put on their wedding duds for a “trash the dress” session.  I wanted to first capture them with the beauty and formality we typically associate with wedding photos so they could have that portrait they always wanted.  Then for the “trash the dress” part I thought it would be fun to wade her into the water in a poetic way.

Where there any hurdles?

There really weren’t!  The couple was so much fun, we got a gorgeous night at the beach, the water was relatively warm for Maine waters…..it all went great!  The fun part was that people kept stopping to watch and offer their congratulations to the couple thinking it was their wedding day 🙂

Your best photographer/session advice?

Don’t be afraid to try something different.  Go outside of your comfort zone.  Try a new type of shooting, a new kind of client, a new method of processing.  Just keep pushing yourself.  Push yourself creatively until it scares you.  Art often lies on the edge of familiarity and the complete unknown – you need to be brave and go for it.

What gear was used to achieve these?

I did this whole shoot with my D750 and my Sigma 35mm 1.4.  I had thought I would also use my 105mm but everything was coming together just the way I wanted with the 35mm and I wanted to keep the feel of the images consistent.
