“There is only one sun. We can’t all claim to only have one way to use the light, but we can REDEFINE how we choose to express it.”

Why are you passionate about photography and this style of portraiture?

Photography is my voice.

Documentary Photographers are our eyewitness with their observations of the world and its people. They use their knowledge, skills and trained eyes to see hidden messages in our societies and captures the moments of time for all of us to see, now and in the future. Documentary Photography is an important method of recording history, sharing emotional truth. Lifestyle Photography captures real-life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of everyday. The primary goal is to tell stories about people’s life.
The reason I decided to go this path, I think that first is because I am not American, and I see things in a different way. I am looking for the emotion and connections to tell a story, and that was the way I found to tell them.

When did you first decide to pursue this style? Or, when did you first realize you liked the candid and documentary?

I think that I first realized that 5 years ago, when I started to fall in love with some blogs, and some photographers that had this style of photography. They are still the same people I follow today.

What are the tips you would share with anyone trying to achieve this technique or subject/topic?

The tips that I give to people that want to follow this path:

– always be connected with yourself first, and then with your surroundings, your subjects.

– have a plot of the story you want to tell
– find the emotion of your characters and their relationships
– set a mood for your story, composition, light and color
– and the final one HAVE A POINT OF VIEW.

About the photographer:
Hi. My name is Marcela Rafea. I was born in Brazil and worked there as an actress since 10 years old. After I got married, 12 years ago, we moved to the States where I had my first daughter , Olivia. After my second daughter, Flora, who is 7 now, I started to take photography more seriously. By that time, we where living in Colorado, where I attended to Naropa University for photography. Little by little, I started to find my voice. I am fascinated by people and their stories. I hope to bring them something honest, artistic, and show my point of view of their lives.
