BE INSPIRED SESSION featuring Vera Mendizábal Photography

Is this personal work or client work?

Client.

What about this session was most memorable?

Getting to know this little girl during the session was so fun. Her personality shined through the lens and her ease around horses at such a young age was inspiring. She walked through that stable like she owned it. So much confidence!

Where there any hurdles?

We had to reschedule due to weather a few times. The day we finally got together was after the rain so it was cold and there was a ton of mud and, well, mud + pretty lace boots don’t mix! But this kid is tough and she made posing in 45 degree, overcast weather look like nothing.

Your best photographer/session advice?

When photographing children, always take the time to develop a strong rapport with them first. Ask how they are feeling that day, if they like what they are wearing, who their best friend is. The best looks, smiles and poses come when they feel at ease with you. Plus, it makes it more fun for the photographer to get to know a little bit about the subject too!

What gear was used to achieve these?

Most shots were taken with my Nikon D750 and D800 with the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4D, respectively. I also experimented with my first Canon that day. It was the 6D with a 24-105mm kit lens. It performed remarkable well! I am glad I brought it (even if I didn’t quite know how to use it) because the shots I took of her with the horse were with the stable immediately behind me and I ended up needing that wider length.

About the photographer:

Hello! I am a photographer based in Huntington, New York and I specialize in children portraiture. My life gets a little hectic sometimes with two energetic boys, my husband, home and now a kitten (!!!) to care for, but I try to keep a good balance between home life and growing my business. It’s not always easy, but I love what I do and will always make room for photography.

  1. An inspired and inspiring session! You clearly had an amazing rapport with the girl–she could be her whole sweet-and-saucy self, and that shone through in the photos. A superlative set of images.

  2. These are gorgeous portraits. My favourite one is of the girl in the stable with the horses in the background. Just beautiful.
