BE INSPIRED Session featuring Roots and Twigs Photography

Is this personal work or client work?
This is a personal session, timed to coincide with Father’s Day, an evening in the life with Daddy, if you will.

What about this session was most memorable?
My husband shaved on the weekend for it! =) Also, I enjoyed following him and our kids around our property and a nearby field, chasing light and just generally enjoying simple pleasures together. I feel like this is the first cohesive session they’ve ever allowed me to photograph of them, so that’s very memorable. My son has always been an unusually sweet and gentle soul, but in the past 6 months or so, I have noticed a rapid shift to new interests including sci-fi and more rambunctious play. I see those various personality traits in these photos and it tugs at my heart in some bittersweet way. My daughter is generally overflowing with energy and joy, and my husband enjoys big fun with them, all evident in these as well.

Were there any hurdles?
Well, many photographers will tell you that their own family  members are their most difficult subjects, but mine were pretty good that night! There were no true hurdles, as I simply documented everyday moments and joy, including my husband more than usual.

Your best photographer/session advice?
Be flexible; be yourself; relax and have fun; and embrace – or at least accept – funky attitudes and perfectly imperfect moments. The most meaningful photographs in my life are – without question – candid, honest moments, whether they include tears, stink-eye, or droopy drawers. Perfection can be a pretty boring and exhausting standard, and I am more than happy to capture the true memories and spirits of my subjects. I enjoy those images most as I look back on life’s moments to date.

What gear was used to achieve these?
I intentionally kept it simple and mobile, shooting with only my Nikon D750 and 85mm f1.8 lens. I occasionally wished I had brought my 28mm along for some wider shots, but don’t feel like I missed much without it.

About the photographer:
Hi! I’m Tori! I am primarily a natural light, lifestyle and documentary people photographer, as well as a fine art photographer of macros, wildlife, and landscapes around my beautiful life in Fort Collins, Colorado. Kids, dogs, horses, joyful families, boutique DIY weddings, and high school seniors light up my life. Extensive international adventures on shoestring budgets are among my most treasured experiences, and I have a lot of ground left to cover. I started film photography in earnest over 25 years ago, currently shoot all digital, but am actively planning my second home darkroom for personal projects, at least!
