Normal featuring Story and Song Photography

Its that time of year again that we celebrate the enormous sacrifice many mamas make when they breastfeed their babies. August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. A time to acknowledge your accomplishments and reminisce on that special bond. I’ve seen in past years that some mamas feel left out or saddened by this week honoring breastfeeding and I just want to take a moment to say: “please don’t!” Be it your circumstances didn’t allow you to breastfeed as long as you wanted to, or you were physically unable to, or you simply didn’t want to, just look at your baby and know that no matter your situation, your child was fed, happy and most importantly, loved!

Unfortunately, a climate has emerged where breastfeeding isn’t seen as normal. Or it is seen as something to be done in private. I personally feel that breastfeeding photography is so important to help encourage mamas who feel like it is weird, or mamas who have hit a rough patch and are looking for one tiny thing to remind them all the sleepless nights, struggles with latching, or pain, or weight gain, or diet restrictions, is worth it, and to remind people how natural and down right beautiful a peacefully nursing baby is. It isn’t gross, unsanitary, strange, inappropriate, or anything more than a hungry baby having a meal.

So let us celebrate nursing mamas, past and present, who battled lip ties and cluster feeds, gassy babies and unsolicited opinions, milk soaked sheets and breast pumps, to do what they felt was best for their baby. And just remember a celebration of one thing is not meant to degrade any other ;)!
