Why are you passionate about this topic?
I am passionate about this because to me this is what it’s all about and why I do photography. I love capturing emotion. I want a picture to freeze not only a moment but also the connection that was going on at the time. My goal is to have someone look at the image and to FEEL the photograph. To have something stir inside them.
When did you first learn this technique? Or, when did you first realize you liked this topic
I have always wanted to capture meaning in my pictures but i had to figure out my style for awhile. I started getting more to where I wanted to be about a year ago. I did The Blissful Maven’s breakout workshop and it got me on the road to capturing connections. I think the biggest thing is to find your style and what you like to create, and you will grow from there. I love capturing connections and love, so i look for it no matter what type of session- whether I’m doing couples, siblings, or parent and babe, etc.
What are the tips you would share with anyone trying to achieve this technique?
Tips I have would be to shoot, shoot, shoot. Capturing intimate images can be awkward at first, so the more you can practice the more it will become more comfortable.
Another tip would be to have a plan prior to shooting. It doesn’t mean you have to stick to it exact, but sometimes I have just one idea in my head that I really want to nail before the shoot is over. It seems like that one idea can get the create juices flowing for the rest of the session.
What were the challenges for you in the beginning?
A challenge for me was definitely feeling awkward. I am pretty shy so to get couples to pose intimately is way out of my comfort zone. I won’t lie I even still feel awkward sometimes if I’m trying something new that I haven’t done before. But the trick to be confident in what you will get in the end. The client puts faith in us knowing what works and looks good- so you need to be confident in yourself as well. If you know the end result will work and look good, they will feel more at ease in doing something outside of their usual comfort.
