28/31 Epic summer sessions | Feature by Natalie Thomas

Is this session personal work or client work?

This is personal work, of my family when we had the entire pool to ourselves.

Tell us a bit about the magic of summer +the connection to your lens?

We had been going to the pool, well pretty much every single day since it opened for the summer. Since we have young kids, we hardly ever spent the entire evening there but we decided to make it special and wait out the crowds and then when the sun hit just behind the building, the light became magical. I made my husband run home and grab my camera gear 😉

What about this session makes it an Epic summer session?

An epic summer somehow usually relates to water. Cooling off in the heat of the day. Dinners outside. No shoes. The smell of sunscreen and water soaked hair.

What else is on your summer bucket list to photograph this summer?

This summer my family and I are heading to a beach in North Carolina (our last trip to an east coast beach) before we move back out west to Washington state and I definitely plan on bringing my camera!

What gear was used to achieve these?

The gear used in this session was my Nikon D610 and 35mm 1.4 Sigma Art. One of my favorite combos!

Any summer tips or photographer advice?

My summer tips while shooting would be to first, HAVE FUN and to break the rules! Get creative and most of all, get in the frame!

ABOUT THE ARTIST :

I am a self-taught natural light, lifestyle photographer in the Northern Virginia area. I am a mother to two amazingly beautiful sons and a wife of a soldier. Although my journey with photography started over a decade a go in the dark room developing film, I didn’t start shooting with intent until about 4 years ago when I had my second child and my husband was deployed. I needed a way of capturing and preserving those moments that he was missing and still have a way of letting him feel like he was there, in the moment, feeling those same feelings as me. I wanted my images to connect us, even though we were worlds apart. His absence made me crave the small details of my children’s childhood and it challenged me to be more aware of my perspectives and how I viewed all forms of light. To capture light and movement and feeling all in one frame is how my heart sings.
