BE INSPIRED Session | feature by Erica Williams of Woodsy Wonders Photography

Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.

I consider myself a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in family connections through family photography. My motto is,” if a photograph doesn’t make you feel something, then what is it’s purpose?” I want to capture emotion and connections through my work in beautiful light. I want people to look at my work and FEEL something. I started my photography business 10 years ago. Art has always moved me since I can remember. I went to college for interior design but loved photography more. The two forms of art compliment each other.

What about this session was most memorable?

This session turned out so perfect. I had met this sweet family at church when we first moved to the area. The mom contacted me and we started planning her session. She agreed to do the session at our local farm. She sent my photos of what they would wear and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The most memorable would probably have to be the very last shot. As we were walking towards their car I noticed the chickens following us out and the little boy looked back and grabbed mom’s hand. I knew it would be my favorite shot of the whole session.

Were there any hurdles?

There were no hurdles with this session. I truly believe in having a fun and relaxed atmosphere when photographing families. This helps the children to be more willing to let loose and be themselves. If the kids are getting restless, I will quickly change the scene and ask them to play a game. Getting their minds off the camera is the best way to get them to cooperate.

Your best photographer/session advice?

My advice would be, don’t put your camera away until they are loading in the car. Those last shots are always my favorites. At the end of my sessions, I have “free” time where I let the kids run around and do what they want. I also keep my camera close by and ready to shoot as I am walking the family to their car. You never know what you might capture in those last minutes!

What gear was used to achieve these?

These were shot with my Nikon D750 and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens. This is typical for any family session. I own two D750 cameras because I love them so much. I have always owned Nikon cameras every since I started photography.
