Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.

As a photographer, we are blessed to document some of the most important moments in people’s lives. And well, I love it all. Seriously. From him popping the question to that first cry you hear after hours of labor; from snuggled sleepily in mama’s arms to running wild through a cotton field. I love capturing every phase of life. I enjoy the rush of walking in to meet with a client for the first time, as strangers, and walking out friends. I’ve “been in business” a little over two years, but I’ve loved photography and all that comes with it for as long as I can remember. A few personal facts about me: I think macaroni can be a meal or a side, and my husband thinks this is weird. My mom was a Jones before she married my dad, and now I’m a Jones. No, no relation. Just trying to keep up with the Joneses. Ha! My husband and I recently purchased my childhood home, which was built by my grandparents, and I think that’s pretty cool.

What about this session was most memorable?

This was my youngest newborn (excluding birth and fresh 48 sessions) at four days new, and the first newborn from a different culture. Learning traditions from her grandmothers about their heritage were probably my favorite part, and hearing them tell about how the whole family came together to create the perfect Harry Potter themed nursery. The pillows in the crib were handmade by the maternal grandmother; the white wall behind the crib was built by the paternal grandfather.

Were there any hurdles?

Not knowing the ins and outs of their culture. I wanted to be sure I didn’t offend them in any way. For example, I wasn’t even sure if they celebrated Christmas (they do, by the way).

Your best photographer/session advice?

Relax. With newborns especially; they can sense when you’re nervous or tense. Pay attention to the details; even the tiniest of details. Make your clients feel comfortable, and don’t be afraid to laugh with them. Challenge yourself; it’s how you grow. Be confident; they love your work or they wouldn’t have hired you to capture their most precious memories. Practice community over competition; you’d be surprised what you can learn from ‘tog friends.

ABOUT THE ARTIST :

Hey Y’all. I’m Kassie. Jesus follower, wife to a super-hot bearded man who happens to make a killer assistant, and photographer. I love laughing until I snort and binge watching our favorite shows snuggled on the couch. And I absolutely LOVE having my camera in my hand, even when I’m not working….but really, can you call doing what you love “work”?
