BE INSPIRED | Session feature by Katherine Millard

Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.

My approach to my family work is to create meaningful keepsakes. I think about an in-home session like they are time capsules. We have so much story in our homes and it’s my favourite place to do sessions because they truly are a place of meaning. I’m always waiting for people to drop their guard and be their true selves. It can take people a little while to do that so my sessions are normally a few hours so we have time to relax and wait for those moments to come. I’ve always taken photographs and have exhibited some personal street photography in the past but I’ve been doing family work for a little over a year now. Like so many photographers after having my own children I realized how much I loved capturing the every day and the in-between moments and that I wanted to do that for other people too. Basically, I’m addicted to taking photographs.

What about this session was most memorable?

This family was in the midst of moving home. The lived in a beautiful terrace in inner Sydney but had decided to move out of the City to a place where they would have more room for their baby boy to grow. I think it was probably with mixed emotions that they had made that decision. When Sherry contacted me to arrange their session she said she wanted to capture some memories of the home and also some breastfeeding moments as she knew these days were also drawing to a close. The session was at 8am – this is my absolute favourite in-home session time. Everyone is relaxed and feeling cozy – almost in a little cocoon. So it was a special session because it was really to document some lasts but also to remember their firsts in this home too – the place they have lived as a couple and the first place their baby knew as home.

Were there any hurdles?

Inner Sydney terrace homes can be very dark with little natural light. I worked with the natural light coming in from the terrace balcony in the upstairs bedroom, the side window in the stairwell and we spent some time on the front steps to maximize the light. This light ended up being beautiful so what seems like a hurdle can actually be one of the things that makes the session special – after all the light sources are a point of the feature in terrace homes.

Your best photographer/session advice?

Prepare your clients for what to expect and urge them to be themselves. Before you start you need to put them at ease and explain what you will be doing and what they should do. During the session, you need to think about your light and change your angles. Always take a step back and think about what you haven’t captured. Be yourself – people feed off your energy.

What gear was used to achieve these?

I shoot with a Nikon D610 and a 14 -24mm Nikon lens.
