Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.
Like many, I began developing a love for photography after the birth of my first daughter. A few years after her birth and many iPhone photos later, I finally took the plunge and purchased a DSLR. Over the years I taught myself to use my camera and took many photography courses for inspiration. I’ve taken clients over the last four years, but it has not been until this last year that I’ve discovered what really speaks to me in photography. My greatest desire is to capture those priceless moments of families being families. I used to struggle with client sessions because I felt that everyone needed to be posed and perfect. Now I encourage my clients to find family activities and to just be themselves during sessions. While I do continue to take traditional portraits during sessions, I am always drawn to those real-life moments when a family is reading a story together or having a tickle fight on Mom and Dad’s bed. Those are the photographs that make my heart sing!
What about this session was the most memorable?
This session was especially memorable because I was spending the day with a good friend of mine and her daughters. I was so excited to document these special moments for Mom and her girls to always cherish.
Were there any hurdles?
When you have several children in a photo session, there will always be some hurdles. On this particular day, one little one was excited and ready to be on camera. It was actually difficult to capture her without her smiling right at the camera. However, her sister was not super thrilled. But throughout the session, she and Mom worked it out. I was even able to capture a bit of the sweet and emotional hug session. I know these will be great memories for the family.
Your best photographer/session advice?
Slow down, relax, and enjoy the session. When you are relaxed, it makes it so much easier for your clients to relax and be themselves. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to mix it up and try something different.
What gear was used to achieve these?
Canon 5D Mark IV
Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4
