BE INSPIRED SESSION |Feature by Erika Venci Photography

Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.
I have learned so much about myself through photography I do not know where to begin.. I have been in business for almost two years and holding a camera for almost three. I never imagined what would come from buying that first camera that I just wanted to play with as a hobby. I could have NEVER imagined that I would fall in love with photography in this way. It is a little surreal to me, that the once corporate office girl is now running her own business and doing what she loves. Running a business is a grind and not for the faint of heart. It takes grit, dedication, and perseverance among many many other things.. and I don’t always have all of those things but I sure am trying.. I won’t even mention the mom guilt part of it.

My approach for each family I document is slightly different but always the same goal of helping them to relax in front of the camera and just be themselves and be TOGETHER with each other. It is tricky to do sometimes but it’s always magical when you know they are starting to forget you are there. I always strive to capture real moments that show love. With this World Breastfeeding Project, that was definitely easy because I was documenting maternal love and connection.

What makes you the most nervous during a session?

So many things can make me nervous: Tired kids, Dad’s not into it, my jokes aren’t funny.. etc. If something “off” happens, I tell myself it’s a learning experience and try not to dwell. What doesn’t kill you makes you a stronger photographer and business owner. I get some stage fright every once in a while but once the shutter starts going, I easily get in the zone and the creativity takes over.

What about this session was most memorable?

Definitely the laid-back, cozy feeling of the session. It was so fun because the kids were SO happy in their pajamas getting mommy milk!

Were there any hurdles?

I have to say, honestly, this was one of the smoothest sessions I have ever had..

Your best photographer/session advice?

My best advice would be to take photographs of what you love. Don’t focus on an area of photography because you feel that it will make you more profitable. If you do what you love, it will show in your work. The success will come if you work hard.

What is one goal for your business you want to achieve?

I want to say better work/life balance but I feel like that is easy to say (and so true..) But my main goal right now is to continue to discover what I love to photograph and developing my style so that it reflects my authentic self. This is hard when you feel pulled in many different directions, but I am slowly getting there.. it’s like slowly chipping away at a statue.

What gear was used to achieve these?
My Nikon D750 and SigmaArt 35mm

Any presets used or hand editing?
Edited in Lightroom using SMAL presets with some tweaks. I am really loving the grain lately.

ABOUT THE ARTIST :

I am a lifestyle photographer living in the Columbus, Ohio area with my computer savvy, amazing husband, our almost three-year-old son, and baby girl. My family runs on pour-over coffee, animal crackers, giggles, and wine. I fell in love with photography after the birth of our son and feel like I have finally found my passion. I quit my corporate job two years ago to become a work-from-home mom and it was the best decision I have ever made. Photography feeds my soul and I am so happy to be on this journey.
