BE INSPIRED Session | feature by Bree Bain, from Beautiful Little Things Photography

Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.

My approach to my work is as relaxed as possible. I love my clients and I love interacting with them, that’s the most important thing for me. Once my clients are comfortable with me, we can all have fun and enjoy it. I work hard to capture natural, spontaneous interaction and emotion between a family. I want to see the love between them and I want them to go home with photos that reflect just that.
Creativity is also hugely important to me. I want to find the most interesting angle or the most artistic background. When I edit I find dark, moody and vibrant is my jam.
I am an actor and a huge fan of music, I adore art house films and I think my work is somewhat influenced by these things. I’m also a mother to two little boys who keep me on my toes and who also, much to my delight, love to be photographed.

What makes you the most nervous during a session?

I have been shooting for about 5 years now and I don’t really get nervous anymore. I used to be nervous about what light I might find in a client home or if their kids will behave for me or not. I mean, it’s always a bit nerve-wracking walking into a stranger home during such an intimate time, but you get over that pretty fast. I’d say I was more excited than nervous these days I get such a buzz from what I do. I come home from a shoot as high as a kite!

What about this session was most memorable?

The people. These two were so lovely and accommodating I didn’t want to leave! Their bub was so calm and quiet the whole session. Their home was a photographers dream, it wasn’t huge but it had beautiful light and was tastefully decorated. It was the kind of session you leave with a bounce in your step.

 Were there any hurdles?

No, it all went very smoothly. The couple was warm and very connected, their bub was honestly a complete angel. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect session.

Your best photographer/session advice?

Breath, Slow down and focus. Pay attention to the details around you. Is there a funky rug you could use to pose the bub on, Is there a cool painting, mirror, pot plant you could include in the frame? Choose interesting angles, go wide, go tight shoot through things. Be open and encouraging with your clients, joke with them and make them feel at ease, and your photos will reflect this. Have a handful of prompts you can use to make your family laugh.
If kids aren’t cooperating, let them go play and move onto Mum and Dad, they almost always come back because they don’t want to miss out on the fun.
Go with the flow and don’t be afraid of high ISO.

What is one goal for your business?

To keep pushing the bounds of my creativity and to continue to build a client base that really gets me and my style. Both my boys will be in school next year so I will finally have more time to focus on my business.

What gear was used to achieve these?

I always use my Sigma art 35mm 1.4 lenses on my Canon 5d Mark 111. That’s all I really need. I bring a 50mm in case it’s a really tight space and I want to get the whole family in a shot but I hardly ever use it.

Any presets used or hand editing?

I have been using Rooke and Rover presets which have been awesome. Although I do tweak them a little bit here and there.
