BE INSPIRED | Maternity Session feature by Vida Images

Tell us a bit about your approach to the work you do, your time in the business and a few personal facts about you.

Hi, I’m Renee. I am in my second year of my business and am so grateful that my art has become my work. I am drawn to connection and telling stories through my images and I strive for my images to have soul. I want my viewers to be able to spend time and really take in my images and feel something. I draw my inspiration from everyone and everything around me but mostly my children. I have five. Our house is loud and there is always so much going on yet my partner and I often talk about how strange it would be to have it any other way. I’m a ‘wing it’ kinda girl. Life, parenthood…. The works!

I wake up at 4am every weekday and take 90min out for myself at the gym. It keeps me feeling good and helps keep my mind in check. I love to cook and I am obsessed with gardening. My girls and I share in a love of anything creative but when we aren’t doing that we love to go camping or just for little day adventures out bush. We live in Outback Australia and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

What makes you the most nervous during a session?

I feel so good in saying this but I don’t seem to get nervous often anymore. Not like at the beginning. In the beginning I would call a friend for a pep talk whilst waiting for my clients but now through my process, by the time I arrive to my session I know all of my people and feel like their friend. Sometimes fear of the unknown can bring in nerves. For instance, a new location. But I now know I just have to slow down and take my time and really think about the shots I was wanting to create.

I’ve learnt to just go with it and being flexible and being able to let go of your ideas and move on if it’s just not working is key.

What about this session was most memorable?

Where do I start?! Her amazing her for one! And, shock horror – she is about to cut it short! So yes, we both talked about incorporating her hair in the session and when I saw here my mind went straight to Pocahontas or Eve vibes and I knew we had to get very earthy and use a lot of Mother Nature.

Were there any hurdles?

I was so fortunate that this session flowed. An important factor I have found is investing time prior to your session with your client for then when you all rock up to the session you are already friends.

Your best photographer/session advice?

Comparison can be a killer. Stay true to your own voice for it is valuable and has a place in this big wide world. Just do it. Put your art out there for the whole world to see and try not to overthink it. Creative sessions are a must. They are fuel for the soul and allow you so much freedom and the personal growth is amazing.

My biggest advice in sessions would be to slow down. You are in control. If you don’t like the way it’s going or what it looks like then change it. There is no better feeling than getting in the car afterwards and being like ‘Yes! I am so glad I got them to do that’, rather than getting home and uploading it thinking ‘I should have done…..’

What is one goal for your business ?

I have a list of goals that is always growing. I guess what I want to do is not lose momentum. Push through those periods where the inspiration isn’t flowing and use that downtime in a positive way. One goal this year is to focus more inward on my work and not compare myself to anyone else in my field but more so appreciate their work and be thankful that I am creating art everyday.

What gear was used to achieve these?

This session was done with my Nikon D850 and Nikon 35mm 1.4

Any presets used or hand editing?

Yes, my dear friend Lauren from Love Her Wild Photography just released these and they are flawless and so easy to use. I had the pleasure of testing them and am in LOVE.
