It’s been such an inspiring week as guest judge! I am so honored that you shared all your gorgeous images with me, and was struck by the variety of interpretations of this week’s theme. To me, simplicity means timelessness and understated beauty, and represents the hidden power of subtle imagery.

Joy of Life Photography

With the soft light and pastels, this image is the epitome of understated and sophisticated beauty. It is colorful while still maintaining a quite calmness and subtlety-timeless while still placing us in a particular moment (and season).

The tones and textures in this stunning black and white image, in conjunction with the winding shoreline and far off gaze of the subject, represents how powerful an understated image can be!

Silhouettes are one of my favorite forms of simple beauty. With the leading lines and beautiful conversation between light and dark, this image is extremely powerful and sweet at the same time.

To me, this image represents timelessness and simplicity. The beautiful clean lines of the window pane and the lovely curve of the bottles could have a universal beauty that really resonate with the viewer.

Often a simple background with an artistic use of negative space create a stunning, simple image. These elements combined with an adorable subject matter and dramatic lighting make this photo really pop!

This image is captivating! The elements are simple- a single boat, the sky, the water, and a colorful sunset, but this image stirs a sense of awe in the viewer…and definitely makes us wish we were there!

I was truly humbled by my  experience this week- the talent I saw shared on Dear Photographer’s Facebook page was astounding! I admire the creativity and vision of each and every one of you!

aliciamossphotographyguest

I am so very excited to be the guest judge this week on the Dear Photographer Facebook page! I’m a lifestyle photographer with a fine art infusion living in Hoboken, New Jersey. My love for photography started in 2014 with the birth of our daughter, and I’ve been behind the lens ever since. I shoot with a Nikon D750, and my go to lens is my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 (I also adore my Lensbaby Sweet 35!). Here is some information about me, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s photos this week!

10 Fun Facts About Me

  1. People joke with me that I’m a 32 year old going on 82- no lie, I like to spend quiet evenings knitting and watching The Golden Girls.
  2. My husband and I are history buffs, every autumn we visit the Civil War Battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (my ancestors fought there)
  3. I’ve never seen Star Wars (I know, I know..I need to watch it!)
  4. I once wore two different heels to dinner (different heights and everything) and didn’t notice until it was pointed out by a friend at the end of the evening.
  5. Hearing my daughter cry for the first time was the happiest moment of my life .
  6. My secret dream is to someday own a Bed & Breakfast or a coffee shop.
  7. I printed out and framed the first photograph I was ever really proud of- I can see all it’s technical flaws and etc. now, but it’s still very special to me and it hangs in our home.
  8. I sometimes read urban legends online to creep myself out…as a kid I thought it was so much fun being scared and as an adult I still enjoy a good horror movie.
  9. I could live on Mexican food alone, it’s my absolute favorite cuisine. I make a pretty good Mole sauce.
  10. My dream vacation would be to travel back to Florence, Italy (I studied abroad there) and spend a week taking photos of everything and anything…and of course drinking wine and cappuccinos.

BE INSPIRED Session Featuring Alicia Moss Photography

aliciamossphotography
Is this personal work or client work?
This series is personal work, and I have chosen my favorite photographs from two separate sessions about a week apart. I wanted to capture the same subjects in the same environment (our apartment) over a short time frame to capture the essence of our everyday artistically. No matter how mundane daily life can feel, there is magic in these fleeting moments.

What about this session was most memorable?

As always my subjects! My little girl and our Dachshund are really wonderful models. I am always fascinated by the variety of emotion and body language I capture when I photograph these two! With a young child and a dog everything they do is so spontaneous and natural, it keeps you on your toes but it’s also a lot of fun!

Were there any hurdles?

I think it’s always a challenge to create unique photographs day after day in the same place – especially when you’re in a smaller space like an apartment. I wasn’t sure if I could create as much variety I would have liked, which is why I switched up my lenses and really looked for the light…I let the light and my subjects dictate where the images were taken. Also it’s always a challenge to keep clutter out of the frame, that part takes some planning and often times a quick cleanup is in order!

What is your best photographer/session advice?

Be confident and take your time! I think we often rush to try and catch the “perfect” moment, and sometimes this approach does work! But when you’re in your own home photographing your family it’s okay to wait for the moment, think about new angles and lighting situations, and challenge yourself by playing around with your camera settings/post processing. When you feel comfortable with familiar subjects and surroundings I think that allows your to stretch your creativity in new ways- and you can always apply these new techniques to client sessions.

What gear was used to achieve these?

My camera is a Nikon D750, and I used my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens and my Lensbaby Sweet 35 Optic. When I found myself falling into a rut mid-session I would switch to my Lensbaby for an extra challenge. In Photoshop I added texture and paint effects, which is something I wouldn’t necessarily do if I were taking photos for someone else… but it’s something I’ve been experimenting with a lot lately in my personal photos. I love drawing and painting so I enjoy infusing these elements into my photographs.
