Tell us about this session. What about this session was most memorable?

This engagement and proposal session was absolutely incredible. You know when you meet someone and you feel like you’ve known them your whole life? That was Jon and Joi. They are genuine, fun and relaxed, up for anything and down for a little adventuring. They were a dream to photograph and work with. Before we even started Jon said, ‘I made sure to leave my phone and wallet in the car so they aren’t making my pockets bulgy!’ Yup, dream clients I tell you. And Joi, well her name is absolutely perfect for her, she is the happiest, sweetest most gorgeous gal with the the BEST smile on the planet.

Where there any hurdles?

We photographed up in the mountains, quite a ways from the Strip, which means sometimes things happen and the couple runs a few minutes behind. Normally I wouldn’t mind, but the sun was dipping lower and lower and I didn’t want to lose light and be too rushed. However, it all turned out in the end. I used a bit of ninja like photo skills and finished the shoot right after the sun dipped behind the mountain, win!

Your best photographer/session advice?

Be your funny, crazy self. Whatever you have to do to get the couple to feel comfortable in front of your camera. Most people feel awkward at first, it’s your job to minimize that time and get them to open up within the first 10 or so minutes. Give them actions and motions to do instead of stiff, rigid poses. It gives the photos more of a natural look and stays true to who they are as a couple. Also, constantly talk to them and tell them they are doing awesome and looking great.

What gear was used to achieve these?

For this shoot I used my Nikon D750’s, my Sigma Art 50mm and my brand new Sigma Art 35mm.
